Lightweight Tents for Hiking, Trekking & Wild Camping

Backpacking tents are designed for those travelling on foot, where every gram matters. These tents focus on low weight, compact pack size, and weather protection – making them a top choice for hikers, wild campers, and cycle tourers. Whether you're walking the South West Coast Path or heading into the Scottish hills, a backpacking tent is built to go the distance.

One-Person and Two-Person Tents

We offer a wide range of sizes, with 1-person tents ideal for solo trips and 2-person models offering just enough space for two or a bit of extra room for gear. Many two-person backpacking tents are still light enough for one person to carry, especially if you're looking for a bit more comfort on longer trips.

Some designs come with porch space for cooking or storing your rucksack, which can be particularly useful in poor weather. Look out for vestibules or twin-door designs if that's important to you.

Key Features of Backpacking Tents

When choosing a backpacking tent, there are a few features worth considering:

  • Weight: Ultralight models start at under 1kg, while more robust options with extra space may weigh 1.5–2kg.
  • Pack Size: A small packed tent makes a big difference when it needs to fit inside or outside your rucksack.
  • Weather Resistance: Look for a hydrostatic head rating of 3,000mm or more for reliable rain protection.
  • Ease of Pitching: Freestanding tents are easier to pitch on uneven ground, while tunnel tents may offer better space-to-weight ratios.
  • Ventilation: Good airflow helps reduce condensation, especially in colder months or wet weather.

We stock tents from well-known brands known for reliability in the outdoors, so you can shop with confidence.

Materials and Construction

Backpacking tents are typically made from lightweight ripstop nylon or polyester, with aluminium poles and strong guy lines. Many use silicone coatings or PU treatments to keep the outer fabric waterproof without adding weight. Some higher-end models use Dyneema or other advanced fabrics to reduce weight further.

You’ll also find a choice between inner-pitch-first and flysheet-first pitching. Inner-first is often quicker and lighter, but fly-first (or all-in-one) pitch can be a better option in the rain.

Wild Camping Ready

If you’re planning a wild camp in the UK, a low-profile, neutral-coloured tent helps you stay discreet. Many of our backpacking tents are designed with wild camping in mind – offering minimal visual impact, compact footprint, and fast pitching.
