Our range of camping tents is suitable for both beginners and experienced campers. The main job of any tent is to provide a reliable shelter that keeps you and your gear protected from the weather.
We stock camping tents from leading brands, along with useful extras like tent pegs and tent footprints. From larger family tents to lightweight backpacking tents, there’s something for different types of camping. The key is choosing a tent that suits your plans, group size and expected weather. For wild camping, bivis and shelters can also be a good alternative.
Choosing a tent: What do I need to consider?
Tent pitching
Tents are designed in different ways, so they pitch differently. Some backpacking tents are quick to set up, while larger tents can take longer. It’s worth checking how a tent pitches before buying.
Weight
Weight is important if you’re choosing backpacking tents or carrying your gear over longer distances. Lightweight tents are often more expensive, so it’s worth balancing this with your budget. For a family tent, weight is usually less important.
Features
Different tents come with different features. Understanding pole types and tent structures can help you choose a model that suits your needs in terms of stability and durability.
Tent accessories
Extras like spare tent pegs and poles can be useful in case anything gets lost or damaged. A tent footprint can also help protect the groundsheet and add insulation from cold or damp ground.
Understanding waterproof ratings on tents
All tents are tested for waterproofing and given a hydrostatic head (HH) rating. This shows how much water the fabric can handle before leaking.
Most camping tents have a rating between 1,000mm and 10,000mm. The higher the number, the more waterproof the tent.
- 0–1,500mm (Water-resistant)
Suitable for light summer use. These tents can handle light rain but are not designed for heavy or prolonged rain. Often used for festivals or short trips. - 1,500–5,000mm (Waterproof)
A good choice for regular camping. If you want a reliable family tent, look for at least 1,500mm. - 5,000mm+ (Very waterproof)
Best for tougher conditions, such as hillwalking or longer trips where the weather may change quickly.
Which waterproof rating do I need?
For festivals or short summer trips, a tent with a lower waterproof rating should be enough and is often more affordable.
For trips like a Duke of Edinburgh expedition or more demanding conditions, it’s better to choose camping tents with a higher waterproof rating, as the weather can change quickly.
